COMMANDS

Northern Command
The mission of the IDF Northern Command is to defend Israel's northern borders (with Lebanon and Syria in the Galilee and Golan Heights areas).
The challenges on the Lebanese border are varied and focus on the threats from Hezbollah, including Hezbollah's continued armament, growing rocket arsenal and kidnapping attempts.
The Syrian border poses different challenges as Syria is ruled by a hostile and unstable regime.
Hostile forces in both Syria and Lebanon are supported heavily, in terms of arms, money, training and logistical support, by the Iranian regime.

Central Command
The objective of the IDF Central Command is to defend the residents of the central coastal region as well as residents of the Judea and Samaria (West Bank) region.
At one of Israel's narrowest points, only 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) seperate the coastal city of Netanya from the West Bank security barrier. If the barrier did not exist, it would be simple for anyone wishing to attack Israeli civilians to walk to population centers in central Israel.
Notorious Palestinian terrorist attacks have originated in Judea and Samaria and the Central Command's main purpose is to thwart all forms of terrorist attacks and to root out terrorism wherever it may exist in the region.
The presence and operations of IDF forces throughout the Central Command have prevented the spread of Hamas and other terrorist groups in the region.

Southern Command
The objective of the IDF Southern Command is to defend the southern borders of Israel. The Southern Command is responsible for all units located in the Arava, Negev and Eilat regions.
Crossings with the Gaza Strip:
The crossing points between the Gaza Strip and Israel were built with a considerable investment on the part of Israel, in order to ensure the regular flow of goods and people. Unfortunately, the crossings have been subject to frequent terrorist attacks, including the firing of Qassam rockets, mortar shells, as well as suicide bombings and shooting attacks.
